A five percent decline
has been recorded in the use of gutka, bidi-cigarette, Khaini etc. in Madhya
Pradesh. Public Health and Family Welfare Minister Shri Rustum Singh gave
this information while releasing the Madhya Pradesh report of Global Adult
Tobacco Survey-2, 2016-17. The first survey was conducted in 2009-10 in
which the percentage of tobacco consumers was 39.5 which has declined to
34.2 in 2016-17. Similarly, cigarette/bidi consumption has fallen from 16.9
percent to 10.2 and tobacco without smoking from 31.4 to 28.1.
Make students aware
against tobacco use
Health Minister Shri
Singh told to make aware school and college students about the dangers of
tobacco consumption on a regular basis. Principals and teachers of schools
should keep making students particularly of 6th, 7th and 8th standards about
the ill-effects of tobacco. If this evil is overcome in adolescence, it will
have best results.
Fine amount be
increased
Shri Singh said that
although smoking has reduced in public places, the fine amount imposed on
this should be hiked to Rs 1000 at least from Rs 200. If parents want that
their children should not adopt such habits, they should set example first.
Senior officers also should set examples in front of their subordinates.
Smoking and tobacco
cause serious diseases
It was told during the
programme that smoking not only causes mouth and lung cancer but can also
result in paralysis, diabetes and heart disease. Mouth cancer affects youth
in the 25-35 age group and instead of shaping their future, they have to
face diseases and poverty. Director of National Health Mission Shri S.
Vishwanathan told that seven percent people go under poverty line due to
diseases. He said that Health Department will conduct a survey of oral
cancer with AIIMS.
National Advisor of Union
Ministry of Health Shri Pravin Sinha said that awareness programme against
tobacco is going on in 16 districts of Madhya Pradesh which should be
extended to other districts. Madhya Pradesh is one of the most affected
